Cinco Sol Partidos!

This summer may just be starting to wind down,  but with thanks to MTV and SOL beer, things are heating up around the country with Cinco Sol Partidos!

Five cities. Five parties. Each with a unique Mexican theme, awesome DJ’s – and of course, SOL beer! It’s almost too good to be true!

First party on the calendar was at The Standard in Sydney, where the party people were treated to a Mexican Wrestling fiesta! With DJ’s F.R.I.E.N.D/s and Alison Wonderland rocking the chunes, 100 lucky competition winning gringos and grin-girls were treated to the very best of Lucha Libre! Like a combination of MMA and ballet, the wrestling was both poetic and brutal at the same time!

But the most important thing  was tucking in to the deliciousness that is Sol beer, that, and watching a Psy impersonator strutting his stuff on stage (Honestly – it just wouldn’t be an MTV party unless something kooky and crazy like that happened.)

All in all, an epic night! It’s awesome to think that things are only just getting started – bring on Adelaide on the 22nd of March!

Festival Season

It’s time to dust off your dancing shoes and get your hands on any fluoro* clothing you can find – festival season is here!

For me, Summer and festivals go hand in hand. Spending past summers bringing in the new year at Shore Thing, to partying in the Laneways of Melbourne, to sharing a… beer… with mates at the Falls Festival, these events are what the very best memories are made of.

This Friday is going to be no different with the 2013 Big Day Out kicking off in Sydney. With headline acts such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Killers rocking the main stages, or the more niche bands on show at the other stages (My Tip – If you have time, check out Sampology in the Boiler Room) there is something for everyone this year.

Aside from the music, there’s always a tonne of other things to do at the festival. The Big Day Out always attracts an excellent cross section of Sydneysiders – the spectrum seems to span from Jersey Shore wannabes to Dungeons and Dragons masters, so people watching is always a fun choice. But if a little R&R from the excess of the day is what you are after, the Foxtel MTV House Party will be place to be. Set up right next to the Green Stage, this House Party is being put on exclusively for all Foxtel subscribers and will give them the opportunity to soak up all of the best acts from their very own decked out area.

As always, it going to be HOT. The weather reports are saying that it will be somewhere upwards of 38 degrees. So sunscreen and plenty of water are an absolute must – as mentioned, memories are made at these festivals so be sure look after yourself and your friends out there.

HAPPY FESTIVUS!

*Note: The author does not condone the excessive use of fluoro – to paraphrase Demetri Martin, it makes assholes easy to spot at a distance.

A Night To Remember

Last time I posted on here, it was all about my Olympics hangover – basking in the afterglow of the biggest sporting event of the year.

This time is no different. Yes, admittedly I’m a little hung-over, but mostly this feeling I have is that a big event is over and I’m left wanting more!

To put it plainly – MTV. Summer. Rocked.

Anticipation for summer rises throughout the cold months of the year, and MTV Summer acted as somewhat of a marker in some people’s diaries.

This is because there is simply no way better to herald the start of summer than to share the sweet tunes of Martin Solveig, Havana Brown and Alison Wonderland with 700-odd other revellers. Throw in the opportunity to ride on a 100 year old carousel and you have yourself a pretty awesome party my friend.

In true quirky MTV style, punters were not only treated to some world class music, but also midgets and musclemen, bikini clad babes and fairground fare from yesteryear. And it wasn’t just the punters who had great time – a veritable swag of local and international talent were on hand to enjoy the party, with ‘MTV Style Me’ host Jules Sebastian, ‘The City’ star Jay Lyon, Major Lazer, former MTV VJ and host of ‘The Voice Australia’ Darren McMullen and Molly Meldrum all hitting the red carpet in style.

But, like all good parties, the night seemed to be over in the blink of an eye. Goodbyes were made, after-parties were attended, and whilst almost everyone who attended MTV Summer woke up the next day a little worse for wear, that hung-over feeling was accompanied by something else – that awesome dawning of realisation and that slow smile drifts across one’s face – Summer is here.

MTV Winter

The town crier heralds your arrival. Your very own midget is following your every move and is dressed in matching garb. Your monkey-butler brings you an ice-cold beverage. You could be confused for thinking that this is all some weird, acid induced dream but you would be mistaken. This was the scene that greeted those lucky enough to attend MTV Winter 2012.

The Plaza Ballroom at the Regent Theatre in Melbourne was to play host to the 2012 installment of MTV Winter. The folks at MTV know how to throw a good party and that’s exactly what they did. They started by transforming the ballroom into a Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas Market), complete with hearty European cuisine served from the multitude of food stalls. There was an endless supply of Jägermeister (chilled to exact specifications of below 0) along with V Energy Drinks. There were also tubs and tubs of Moosehead hair products on hand just in case the bloke’s needed some emergency man-scaping and a photo-booth to capture all of the action

Guests were treated to celebrity DJ’s Alison Wonderland and Ruby Rose before Chiddy Bang reminded everyone why there is no one like him. The mass of neon lights suspended from the ceiling above (fashioned in the shape of iconic MTV symbols such as Beavis & Butthead, Snooki & Jackass to name a few) illuminated the mass of people dancing underneath and really set the scene. Chris Lilley was seen rubbing shoulders with Jay from Geordie Shore in the VIP bar along with many of Melbourne’s social elite.

MTV Winter was the perfect place for Frucor V to showcase their latest wacky idea- V Rentals. Basically, this involves drinking V and then renting things, such as a monkey butler (a midget dressed in a monkey suit who tends to your every need), a mini-you (a midget who dresses exactly like you and follows you around- think Verne Troyer in Austin Powers) and your very own personal heralder (a loud and shouty man with a trumpet who announces your every move!). MTV VJ Keiynan was lucky enough to rent his very own midget for the night and their impromptu dance floor dance-off really got the crowd going.

The festivities continued across the road at the official after party and then onto various Melbourne haunts long into the night. MTV Summer is just around the corner- what will they think of next?

MTV Summer Party

The official start of summer down-under is usually reserved for the 1st day of December but this year it came early in the form of the MTV Summer Party at Carriageworks, Redfern on Tuesday November 28th!

Musicians such as Xzibit, Brian McFadden, & Ricki Lee along with some of Australia’s hottest and most influential people were on hand to rock the night away. There was also a half pipe showcasing some impossible skating/bmx tricks, street art section provided by Sol beer (which was also in abundance along with Midori cocktails), and breakdancer’s doing their thing to distract those lucky enough to be inside. But the star of the show was the better half of self-confessed party rockers LMFAO, DJ Redfoo. Redfoo and his team of shufflers performed an epic 2 hour DJ set which left the crowd showered in champagne and wiggle wiggle wiggling! Molly Meldrum and Erin McNaught could be seen shuffling amongst the packed crowd.

The party then moved to Marble Bar where Redfoo continued his party rocking antics to cap off a truly great night and herald the start of many more to come this summer!
